Oliver, better known as @your.onkel.tattoo, is a blackwork tattooist based at The Chamber in Berlin. We spent a few minutes catching up with him about his work.
So, your tattoos aren’t mainstream. What kind of style do you work in and where does it come from?
My style is based on what is possible for me and what is in my range right now. Everything has already been done before, so I try to leave out all the extra things and over the top decorations that are not necessary in a design.
I like it when a client’s idea is straightforward and I’m super happy when I find a way to add a little new or funny twist to it… I work hard to expand my skills because I don’t want to repeat myself again and again. I want to be in this business for longer than just a hype.
Has the Berlin scene influenced your work or have you tried to create your own path?
I try to be influenced by everything and I’m really happy if people recognise me in my work without knowing about it before. Berlin is a great place for sure but it can be also hard and repellent; I try to use both sides of it as inspiration.
Describe your creative process?
I collect ideas from books and my own thoughts and then I just sit down and start drawing!
What is black tattooing to you? Why have some other tattooers taken it too far?
I wouldn’t separate black tattooing from any other type of tattooing. I fucking love all tattooing and the whole life that comes with it!
It’s sad to see blackwork tattoos that start out as really really cool graphics, but don’t work well on the skin. Some blackwork artists just make their tattoos for the Instagram picture/likes and don’t take the time to get the technique right. They should know better…
Where would you like to see tattooing go after this Covid-19 situation?
Maybe a little cleaner?! I think everybody who is diligent and focused will ‘survive’ this for sure. For me this situation has made me see that I should work a little little less and more effectively so that I get the opportunity to spend more time with my son and my family.
Any advice for young tattooers?
Draw!!!! (On paper!)
What music influences you most when drawing up your flash?
Depends on the mood. Last year WuTang, Three 6 Mafia and KatyPerry where my top 3 on Spotify ;)))

Your point of view caught my eye and was very interesting. Thanks. I have a question for you.
I don’t think the title of your article matches the content lol. Just kidding, mainly because I had some doubts after reading the article.
Can you be more specific about the content of your article? After reading it, I still have some doubts. Hope you can help me.
